"Cross-cultural dialogue for the world benefit"

Description This is a call for a new understanding of apologetics, moving away from appeals to tran-cultural rationality, arguing for a new form of cross-cultural dialogue. Christian apologetics is in crisis. Old concepts do no longer hold and post-modern development pose new questions.

Benno van den Toren argues for an apologetic witness that is an exercise in cross-cultural dialogue aimed at persuading our conversation partners of the relevance of a life centred on the reality revealed in Jesus Christ. Some significant steps have been made toward the development of such a new apologetic practice.

He argues that the postmodern critique is right in rejecting the idea of neutrality as well as foundationalism, since putting a belief system together is less like building a tower and more like reading a book we read with a pre-understanding that is adjusted as we read. Drawing from Lindbeck, Van den Toren argues for Christianity as a linguistic tradition into which outsiders are welcomed, a new plausibility structure.

    See a Problem?

Chapters lay the groundwork for the apologetic task. Yet Van den Toren wants a more nuanced view of humanity than Barth. This means that 1 humanity is not made for autonomy but for love and 2 that knowledge always has a communal or cultural coefficient. Van den Toren next turns to develop a Christian theory of knowledge, looking for objectivity without a universal starting point. As mentioned above, Van Toren attempts to move beyond the subject-object dichotomy by appealing to human createdness. With his framework in place, chapters do the constructive work of arguing for apologetics as cross-cultural persuasion.
